Building on our earlier article about adding accessibility checks to existing test automation, I’ve co-authored a comparison with Jörg Jakoby of axe-core and IBM Equal Access. It looks at detection, configurability, integrations, and enforcement to help teams choose the approach that best fits their workflow.

A quick takeaway

axe-core is a strong fit when teams want flexible rules and targeted component scans in their test workflows. IBM Equal Access may suit teams that prefer stricter defaults, built-in enforcement, and baselines for managing existing issues. Neither replaces manual accessibility testing; the right choice depends on how your team wants to find and handle issues.

This is a focused comparison, not an exhaustive list: QualWeb and Pa11y are other options, though less aligned with this in-test workflow. Evinced may also fit, but we haven’t tested or integrated it in our demo.
